She returned to California with Montero when she was twenty, and had one of her first memories come back to her. She was given a bunch of flowers that reminded her of something long ago; it was the scent of those flowers which only grew in California, something that of course she could not have smelt before.
The beginning of her return was pleasant for Elena, and she did not yet know what kind of person Montero was. Out riding at night she met a 'bandit or something', and though she could not see his face he captivated her, and it made her think things she was quite ashamed of. Having been raised as a very religious person she then went for confession, saying that it had been three days since her last and that she had broken the fourth commandment by thinking impure thoughts of a man rather than being the lady her father wished her.
It was then she first saw the brutality of her father and his men, for after discovering that 'Zorro' was hiding in there Captain Love took the opportunity to attempt to shoot him before her eyes.
Later she was walking through the town and a woman came up to her and revealed that she had once been the nanny of Elena, saying that there was no mistaking the child of Diego de la Vega. At first Elena disregarded the comment, thinking that perhaps the woman was thinking of someone else. But that encounter planted a seed that would later bloom into truth.
Elena then met 'Don Alejandro' and his servant 'Bernardo' at a party of her father's. They were there in disguise to learn what Montero was planning for California. She was both taken and infuriated by Don Alejandro, and though he was in fact using her to gain access to her father, he to found himself falling for her.
She found herself confused by what was now happening around her; her attraction to Alejandro and her memories of Bernardo, who she could not possibly have known before. Throughout these events she still remained a strong person, and even challenged 'Zorro' to a duel in an attempt to regain her father's stolen plans. Her valor (or was it stupidity? either way...) was rewarded by defeat and the loss of her clothes, but though it all she remained in control of herself before her father's scrutiny and the eyes of his men.
When she was called to her father later that night and found a sword at his throat she at once sought to help him, but it was then the truth was in part revealed to her. Though Montero refused to admit Elena was not his child, 'Bernado' told her he was Diego, and what it was that was placed on her crib. It was then that she found herself rebelling against her 'father' and releasing Diego from prison. She then accompanied him to the gold mines where she saw exactly what kind of man Montero was, and where she discovered that Don Alejandro was Zorro. Montero was killed, and Diego wounded. Though Diego also died she never truly lost her father because she now had the memory of who her father truly was, and what a great man he had been. She also found a husband in Alejandro Murietta, and together they had a son.
